A Resolution for 2007…

Hello and Happy New Year!   Have you made a resolution this year?  There are many different things I want to change, but I’ve narrowed it down to what I feel is the most important – a resolution for 2007…

My resolution this year is to leave my work at the office and to be a mother, a daughter and a friend, when with my loved ones.  Until recently, I never realized just how much I remain focused on work even when I’m not there.

As I’ve mentioned before, there are anonymous people, who for their own reasons post negative comments about Sundance Vacations on the Internet; as the Communications Director, the posters sometimes target me as well. It’s hard not to take it personally when my company and my own personal integrity are attacked, and I sometimes talk about it with friends and also at home…apparently too much.

A short time ago, I came home from work to find my fifteen-year-old son, Jimmy, at the door waving a sheet of paper at me.  He was excited, and thrust the paper in my hand saying, "Look Mom, check out what I wrote!"  I was humbled by what I read.  Jimmy had sent a message to a poster that said in part, “…my mother has been coming home upset…I decided to check it out myself…my mother is proud of the company where she works and tries very hard to please her customers…It sounds quite simply like you have never been on any sort of vacation with Sundance and you just feel the need to attack my family…I would appreciate it if you stopped judging people, etc…”

What an amazing child, right?  He’s funny, smart, and loves his mother. I wouldn’t change anything about him (except maybe the way he keeps his bedroom).  I have been and continue to remain amazed by both of my children.  It’s hard not to be proud that my son jumped to my defense.  The thing is I don’t want my children to feel as though they have to defend me.  For me, it should be the other way around, always.  I’m the parent and I am entirely capable of handling my professional concerns without dragging my family and friends into it.

I believe children should be worrying about doing their homework, walking the dog, and playing with their friends, not what’s happening to their parents at work. Time flies by and I want Jimmy to enjoy his childhood while he can. I want to enjoy Jimmy’s childhood while I can!  My other son, Michael, is only five years older than Jimmy and he is already a sophomore in college.  It wasn’t that long ago that he laid his head on my lap and wept after losing the All Star Little League Baseball District Championship- now he lives in another state and we only see each other when he’s on break.  Time with my boys is fleeting and I want to make the most of it.

I love my job and it deserves my time and my attention; but so do my children.  This year I resolve to leave my work at the office, and to give my family the time and attention they deserve.

Please write I’d love to hear your resolutions and comments.

Kathy

I absolutely loved your resolution because it was heartfelt and not just about yourself. I think all mothers should follow in those footsteps.

    KATHY,
I TRULY LOVE YOUR RESOLUTION. I CAN HONESTLY SAY FOR AS LONG AS I’VE
BEEN A MANAGER FOR SUNDANCE VACATIONS, THERE HAS NOT BEEN ONE DAY, THAT I HAVENT CALLED IN TO
SEE HOW MY NIGHT WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE. WHY DID I DO THAT? WHAT WAS I GOING
TO DO FROM THE TIME I WOKE UP IN THE MORNING UNTIL THE TIME I GOT TO WORK TO
CHANGE THE RUSULTS? NOTHING. IF MY NIGHT BEFORE WAS A GREAT NIGHT FOR ME I
HAD A GREAT DAY, BUT IF IT WASNT, MY WHOLE DAY WAS RUINED BY ME THINKING OF
ALMOST NOTHING ELSE BUT WORK. LIKE YOU, I TAKE MY JOB VERY SERIOUSLY, AND
GIVE ALL I HAVE WHEN I’M HERE, BUT YOU ARE RIGHT, TIME DOES FLY, AND AS
PARENTS WE MUST STOP AND REALLY FOCUS ON OUR CHILDREN WHEN WE ARE HOME. WORK
WILL BE THERE TOMORROW OR MONDAY. MY DAUGHTER WILL BE NINE YEARS OLD THIS
FEBUARY AND IT SEEMS LIKE YESTERDAY SHE WAS STARTING KINDERGARDEN. SHE KNOWS
HOW MUCH I ADORE HER BUT THERES ALWAYS ROOM FOR MORE.
    CHRISTINA

I’ve only been with Sundance Vacations since October 06. It’s refreshing to see the team spirit and friendliness of everyone. The moment I walked in the door, I felt at home.

What a fun job! We call people and inform them that they’ve been selected for a 3 day 2 night vacation at two of the most exciting places in America, Las Vegas or Orlando.

Their vacation includes round trip air fare and deluxe hotel accomodations. What do they have to do to receive this? Just come into one of our convenient locations for just one hour to learn how we can save them money on future vacations.

I am a newbie at Sundance. Since the first time I filled out the application to the day I came in for training, it has felt like home. I honestley love my job and do not mind getting up in the morning to go to work. For my age (22) finding a decent job and working around going to school was very hard. Sundance gives me the opportunity to work really great hours and also gives me motivation for work and school along with my personal life. I have had some small part time jobs here and there when I graduated high school, even working at a local drug store doing everything from register, to photo lab, to janitor, while working every weekend and every night for 5.30 an hour. I decided this new year that I needed a change, and I decided to take the step to come into Sundance, honestley the best move of my life. I love the people, Denise makes work fun, exiciting, and looking forward to coming work to see how well you did with call backs and shows. My new years resolution would have had to be to do better for myself with my life. Coming here to Sundance like I said did not only just better my work life and my wallet but also boost my confidence and outlook on life.

plus its the only job I know that plays cds, plays games, gives you points for really cool stuff and to cheer and scream when someone gets an appointment!..thats awesome!

I’ve been working Here at Sundance Vacations since 0ct 06′and have recently had a promotion to the Inbound department and I’m loving every day of my job. I come into work knowing that I can change peoples lives on saving them money on vacations. My manager Ginger has been a big inspiration to me to push me to the best I can and last year my first year with the company I was Markerter of the year. This year I’m pushing My self to become Inbound of the year. I’m wrapping this up with saying This is by far the best most rewarding job I ever had. Thank you Sundance Vacations .

Sundance vacations is a very great place to work, in fact, I think it is the most fun and laid back place I have ever worked at in my life. The managers are always trying to come up with new ways to make us smile and laugh, it is really great.

As January has quickly passed us by, I am just wondering if Kathy has kept her resolution? Sometimes when you work for a company for a number of years (almost 15 years in my case) it is extremely difficult to separate your work ethics from your personal life. So, Kathy if you already broke your resolution about leaving your work at the office, don’t worry – it’s ok to combine your two lives. You can be both a hard-working employee and a loving, caring parent at the same time. I’m can guarantee that you never walk into the office and stop “thinking” about your children, and based on your position as the Communication Director I bet you haven’t gone home one night without “thinking” of yet another creative way to help Sundance Vacations continue functioning as an outstanding company. Keep up the good work and keep “thinking”.

Kathy, I agree with your resolution for 2007. And this is the best company to be able to accomplish this. I have been with the company for quite a few years. I first started with the company in 1997. I have taken some time off here and there due to personal issues but, I was always welcomed back. Recently, due to an illness with my son, I have had to take quite a few days off and also go back to a part time position instead of full time. I had no problems with doing this, and what company would allow an employee to do this? I don’t know of any other company. If anyone does, let me know. I work in the Mt Carmel day shift office and it is the best. People who know me might say that is because my mother is my boss but that is not it. I love my job and I love all my coworkers. We all stick together like glue.(HA, HA) I totally agree that we need to stop bringing work home with us. Work is work and home life should be home life. My 10 year old son was just diagnosed as being a TYPE 1 diabetic. My office has been very supportive and I know that if I worked for any other company I would be on the unemployment line. Thank you Sundance Vacations for being a company who works for their employees and not against them.

Hi! This is Darlene from dayshift at the Shamokin Office. I have been working for Sundance Vacations for over 7 years. Boy, how time flies. I NEVER thought I would be here that long. When I first started here, I was recently separated, looking for a job and they offered great hours. I was able to take my 2 boys to school, come to work, and then pick them up after school. Now, over 7 years later…I’m still here. Why? 1st of all, for the amount of hours you work, you can make good money. 2nd, the hours are still great. And 3rd, the people here are wonderful! You don’t see the jealousy like you do at other jobs, we’re actually happy for our co-workers when they get appointments and shows. We don’t have people fighting and not talking to each other because they’re mad at this one or that one. Sundance Vacations is really a nice place to work.

  13. Jenny - February 20th, 2007 at 3:05 pm

Katey Kate, I agree with your resolution though I think you forgot one resolution that was a necessity. You should have made a resolution to bring your favorite Jenny in the IT Deptartment a spicy chicken sandwich at least once a week.

  15. Angela Kinney - April 24th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

I just wanted to leave a thought on New Years resolutions. I never make a New Years resolution. The reason why I never do is because I disappoint myself when I never follow through with it which I know everyone can relate to me on this one. Everyone makes these really difficult almost impossible goals just to make themselves a better person. I decided that this year (which may be consider a New Years resolution) that I am going to set monthly goals for myself. Not real big ones that are impossible to achieve. I think making monthly goals will still make me a better person by the time the year is up. I am doing well with it so far and seem to have met all my goals for each month and will continue to do so. I have not been disappointed yet and that is the main thing.
